Theme:
Bringing
together science, ethical and cultural values, and practical realities
to provide international guidance and standards.
Aim:
To
bring together stakeholders (governmental authorities, scientists, private
sector and non-profit NGOs, consumers) from countries around the world
to support the OIE in its animal welfare activities and to assess the
way they can contribute most effectively.
Current
animal welfare topics being dealt by the OIE:
Sea and land transport of live animals
Slaughter for human consumption
Depopulation for disease control purposes
To
encourage informed debate, participation was by invitation only to those
actively involved in animal welfare, production or transport.
Short
presentations and interactive
discussions;
Draft recommendations were developed by discussion
groups before discussion by the Conference.
Proceedings
will be published in June 2004.
